Locksmith Questions & Answers

Is it a good idea to have someone use a coat hanger to help open my locked car door?

Not unless you have no other choice. The coat hanger technique can cause damage to the paint, to the rubber door seal, and you may have to pry the top of the door out to get the hanger in and that can warp it or even break the window glass. A quality locksmith can open the door, rekey, make new keys, and reprogram a FOB for you.

I had to release a staff member and they haven't given me the key back - what should I do?

When this situation happens, it is wise to have the locks rekeyed immediately. There are also situations where an entire set of new locks may be required. In certain lease agreements and employment contracts, there are stipulations that place the burden of cost onto the person who did not hand the key back in (but that doesn't stop the possibility of copies having already been made). Best bet - rekey the locks.

How Often Should You Rekey Your House?
The frequency of rekeying depends on various factors, including the ones mentioned in our rekey blog post. However, as a general guideline, it's recommended to rekey your house every two to three years. This timeframe strikes a balance between maintaining security and the practicality of the process.

What is the best time of day to can we contact you?

Our standard day starts at 8:00 am and continues until 6:00 PM... but we are available for emergency calls until midnight 7 days a week. We know that lost keys or lock-outs do not operate on a 9:00 to 5:00 schedule. Feel free to contact us with any of your locksmith or security problems.

What does Calgary Rekey Locksmiths specialize in?

Our vans contain key cutting equipment, locks, blank keys and FOBs. We come prepared.

Do I have to get my lock drilled if I lost my house keys?

Drilling is a method of destructive entry. Other attempts that should be made first:

  1. Pick the lock
  2. Bump the lock
  3. Find any other way into the house
  4. A properly trained and licensed technician adheres to the following steps:
    • The owner MUST agree to have the lock drilled
    • Have a replacement ready
    • Understand the broken lock - some locks have anti-drill pins (Calgary Rekey Lockworks technicians are well experienced with these types of locks).

Our Services

Building Lockout

Own the home: If you have already looked for another unlocked door or window, and breaking in is not an option, then it's time to contact a professional locksmith. A locksmith can unlock your door in a matter of minutes, and they can do it without causing any unnecessary damage to your door. Be prepared, though, to pay an average of $156 or maybe even more depending on where you live or the time of day you call (a locksmith is probably going to charge a little extra to come to your assistance in the wee hours).

Rent the home: Explain your situation to your landlord or property manager and ask if they can help you out. They might have a master key or a code to open your door. Keep in mind they might charge you a fee for this service, depending on your lease agreement and the time of day — or maybe not, if you have a really nice landlord. If this is your first time locking yourself out of your apartment, it’s likely that you won’t have to pay. Be polite and respectful throughout this process and don’t argue with them if they refuse to help or request payment. If none of these options work, you’ll need to call a locksmith. Look for a reputable and licensed one in your area and ask for a price quote before they arrive. You’ll have to pay for their service, which can vary depending on the type and complexity of your lock, the time of day and the distance they have to travel. Make sure you get a receipt and keep it for your records.

Building / Office lockout: Much like the home rental, your first call should be the landlord. If they do not have their own locksmith contact, they may simply say you can get quotes and call them back when you have found someone. The cost will be yours but note that not just any locksmith can work on or open some specially designed locks. Make sure to let the locksmith know the name of the lock so there is no misunderstanding. If they cannot fix it then they should not be coming to your site and wasting time.

Copy Building Keys

If matching key blanks are available, then a key kiosk can easily help you out. If you are having trouble getting your key copied at your preferred superstore or local hardware store it is probably because you have an I/C key, a locksmith-only key, a high security key, a DND key, an old key, or a key with an unusual bow. Not all locksmith are capable of copying certain types of keys so it is best that you let them know the brand and model number before they come to the building. If blanks cannot be found the alternative may be to get a new lock system - if you are renting, then this decision is not your to make... contact the building owner / landlord.

Copy Vehicle Key

Older vehicles are simpler to work with when it comes to keys. Later model vehicles may require your vehicle VIN and if part of a key FOB, that means the FOB also needs programming.

Key types:
Traditional Key – This type of key don’t have chip. It will work for old cars and some cars after the year 2000.
Transponder Key – Since 1995 the key has an implanted chip that is programmed to the specific vehicle.
Remote Fob and Integrated Key – This is an all-in-one where the fob unlocks the car and turns everything off and the integrated key starts the car running.
Smart Key (Push-To-Start) – A smart key is a fob that when it is within range of the car, it will enable the car to turn on by the press of a button. It does not need to be inserted into the ignition.

Install Lock

A professional locksmith will be up to date on the latest locks available as well as which types of locks work best in what situations. Selecting high-quality, proven locks will go a long way in protecting your home or business. High-quality locks only perform as well as their installation allows. In addition, a locksmith can install optical door viewers, help you strengthen physical doors to be more resilient, and suggest high-security door jamb or hinge additions.

New Key FOB

You have 2 choices for replacing a vehicle key FOB: Car Dealership or a Locksmith. Dealerships are notorious for charging outrageous prices for key fobs. You probably noticed that if you purchased a spare when you bought your vehicle. You may be curious to know if there’s a way to get a replacement key fob without going to the dealer if you’re trying to save a little money this time around. Why do dealerships charge so much for key fobs? The answer is that they can. Dealerships rely on the fact that most people don’t realize they can get replacement key FOBs from independent locksmiths that aren’t associated with specific automakers. However, locksmiths that offer services for vehicle locks often offer a wide range of fob replacement and reprogramming services for all major makes and models.

Repair Lock

A locksmith is a professional who specializes in locks and keys, and they have specialized tools and training to work with them. Here are a few things that a locksmith can do that you may not be able to do:

  1. Install and repair locks: A locksmith can install and repair locks of all types, including deadbolts, padlocks, and electronic locks. They have the expertise to ensure that the lock is installed correctly and securely.
  2. Make duplicate keys: If you need an extra key for your home or car, a locksmith can make a duplicate key for you. They have the tools and knowledge to create a new key that matches the original.
  3. Unlock doors: If you accidentally lock yourself out of your home, car, or business, a locksmith can help you gain access. They have specialized tools that can unlock doors without causing damage.
  4. Provide security advice: A locksmith can also provide security advice and recommend ways to improve the security of your home or business. They can evaluate your existing locks and recommend upgrades or replacements as needed.

While some of these tasks can be done by individuals with some knowledge and tools, a locksmith has the specialized training and experience to handle them with skill and efficiency.

Stuck Key Removal

As a DIY, Spray a small amount of lubricant, such as WD-40, into the lock. This can help loosen the key fragment and make it easier to remove. If a part of the key is sticking out, use pliers or tweezers to grip the broken piece and gently pull it out. This is not a guarantee of success and most times it is better to contact a professional Locksmith. A broken key extractor tool is the professional solution to this problem. If the locksmith you call does not make their own tools (and chances are they do not), then this will be the tool they use. To use this tool, they place it inside the keyway along the bitting of the key.
